Note on Fourier analysis

Abstract

In the search for empirical periodicities there is no advantage in carrying out computations except for periods that are submultiples of the length of the record. Coefficients for four such periods in the neighbourhood of a maximum amplitude will yield by least squares estimates of a true period and its harmonic coefficients with a valid estimate of uncertainty.
