The source of the T phase recorded in the eastern Caribbean on October 24, 1965

SEISMIC RESEARCH UNIT, UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES,, TRINIDAD. W. I.

Abstract

A high-frequency disturbance lasting for about twenty minutes was recorded at several seismograph stations in the eastern Caribbean on October 24, 1965.

The disturbance was propagated to the seismograph stations north of the island of St. Vincent as T phase from a source which is shown to be the submarine volcano ‘Kick-'em-Jenny.’ It is suggested that the T phase was generated by collapsing steam bubbles generated during an eruption of the volcano. The total volume of steam required to generate the observed seismic energy is estimated conservatively to be 6 x 108 cm3. A remarkable feature of the disturbance are the reports that it was felt at MM intensity III in St. Vincent which is 90 km from the source and at intensity II at a few places in Martinique which is 250 km from the source.
