Propagation of waves in a multilayered elastic medium and their dependence on source mechanisms

Abstract

The stress equations of motion for a multilayered elastic medium subjected to body forces of general type have been solved in terms of three new variables which are functions of the displacement components and their space derivatives. The contributions of the different layers appear as separate 2 x 2 and 4 x 4 matrices whose elements are functions of the material constants and thickness of the particular layer. Some simple applications of the analysis have been discussed.
