An exact correction for accelerometer error in dynamic seismic analysis

G. A. MCLENNAN

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS, AMHERST, MASSACHUSETTS

Abstract

An exact method is developed to correct for the accelerometer error in dynamic response calculations. Starting with the equation of motion for the accelerometer, it is shown that the exact response of a damped oscillator can be expressed as a simple combination of the instrument response and the conventional approximate response calculated from the accelerogram. Response calculations were performed for a series of oscillators with natural frequencies ranging from 2 to 16 cps for an assumed pseudo-earthquake acceleration. The results show that the corrected response accurately reproduces the exact response and that large differences may exist between the corrected and uncorrected responses for high-frequency oscillators.
