Modeling of seismic signals from large underwater explosions to predict the spectra and covariance functions

R. PLUTCHOK* and P. BROOME*

EARTH SCIENCES A TELEDYNE COMPANY, ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA

Abstract

A model is presented which makes it possible to accurately predict the power spectrum and the covariance function of seismic signals generated by large under-water shots. It is shown by comparison of predicted and measured data for several large underwater explosions that the spectrum and covariance depend almost entirely on parameters such as source depth, water depth and first bubble pulse period. It is further demonstrated that averaging of the spectra from widely dispersed seismic stations for a given signal is a useful method for reducing non-source-related effects.
