Abstract
A theoretical version of Båth's law is derived on the assumption that aftershock magnitudes are independently and exponentially distributed. The results are not fully in agreement with the commonly accepted picture of Båth's law, but it is shown by reference to Utsu's table of Japanese aftershock sequences that the discrepancies may be due to bias introduced by the method of selecting the data for study.
