Shear velocities in the lower mantle and the radius of the core

A. L. HALES and J. L. ROBERTS

DIVISION OF GEOSCIENCES THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT DALLAS P. O. Box 30365,, DALLAS, TEXAS 75230

Abstract

Two S velocity models for the lower mantle are derived from the S travel times recently reported by Hales and Roberts. Observations of the difference in travel time of S and ScS are reported. On the basis of these observations it is estimated that the radius of the Earth's core is (3489.92 ± 4.66) km for one velocity model and (3486.10 ± 4.59) km for another.
