An earthquake cluster at Koyna

Abstract

Large numbers of earthquakes of varying magnitudes have occurred in the vicinity of Koyna Dam, Maharashtra, India, since 1962 following the impounding of the reservoir. These earthquakes were shallow, mostly within 10 km of the Earth's surface. These low-magnitude earthquakes were followed by two earthquakes of shallow focus and of magnitudes 5.8 and 7.0, respectively. In the latter earthquake, an acceleration of 0.6 g was recorded.
