Seismic crustal anisotropy in Northern Georgia

LEROY M. DORMAN*

CARNEGIE INSTITUTION OF WASHINGTON DEPARTMENT OF TERRESTRIAL MAGNETISM, WASHINGTON, D. C. 20015

Abstract

The following velocities were observed in the piedmont of Georgia, principally from quarry explosions: Pg, 6.2; Sg, 3.6; Pn, 8.2 km/sec. Velocity variation with azimuth was about 0.75 and 0.45 km/sec for Pg and Sg, respectively. The principal cause is probably velocity banding in the crust, observed previously in short refraction profiles in the coastal plain.
