Abstract
The behavior of models of soil deposits has shown the importance of small scale boundary variations in generating elastic relative displacement of soils during earthquakes. These effects can be explained in terms of phase differences between adjacent masses of resonating soil. Such effects can result in the failure of extended structures during earthquakes.
