Source dimensions of two deep earthquakes estimated from aftershocks and spectra

COOPERATIVE INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO, BOULDER, COLORADO 80302

Abstract

The relation the spectral corner frequency and the source dimensions, r(P, S) = c(P, S)ß/f0 is tested for two deep earthquakes under the assumption that aftershocks approximately outline the rupture area. It was found that c = 0.37 as proposed by Brune (1970) leads to radii estimates within ±20 per cent of the radii outlined by the aftershocks.
