Ray paths and relative intensities in one- and two-dimensional velocity models

A. G. GREEN*

DIVISION OF SEISMOLOGY AND GEOTHERMAL STUDIES EARTH PHYSICS BRANCH DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY, MINES AND RESOURCES, OTTAWA, Canada

Abstract

A scheme for the computation of ray paths and relative intensities in one- and two-dimensional velocity models is presented. Problems involved with interpolation and numerical differentiation are reviewed; Reinsch's (1967) smoothing cubic splines are shown to be satisfactory for one-dimensional and some two-dimensional models. Results of the computational scheme applied to some two-dimensional slab models and models of the North American Cordillera-Shield region are shown to be consistent with observed amplitude data.
