A comparison of the spatial distribution of mantle earthquakes determined from data produced by local and by teleseismic networks for the Japan and Aleutian arcs

Abstract

The spatial distributions of earthquakes determined with well-located events reported by the International Seismological Centre and the U.S. Geological Survey (PDE) for the period 1964 through 1976 are compared with those derived from locations of small events recorded by dense local networks deployed over portions of the Benioff zones, the Aleutians and Japan. For depths greater than about 50 km where control on hypocentral depth is available the results based on teleseismic data show no substantial bias or distortion of the spatial distribution.
