Location of shallow subduction-zone earthquakes inferred from teleseismic body waveforms

Taro Okamoto

Abstract

This article proposes to use the teleseismic waveform of body waves to locate shallow subduction-zone earthquakes. When the laterally heterogeneous structure near the trench axis is incorporated in calculating synthetic body waveforms, not only source depth but also horizontal distance from the source to the trench axis can be well constrained by comparing the synthetic and observed waveforms. This analysis is possible because the waveforms are highly sensitive to the shift of the source position. An example of this waveform method for an interplate thrust earthquake will be described, and gives a well-constrained and reasonable location.
