Abstract
Layered solid-fluid media were analyzed using a discrete wavenumber and normal-mode superposition method, in which normal modes were obtained by finite-element method. A scalar wave equation for fluid pressure was employed in the formulation to introduce the effects of fluid layer. The scalar wave equation for fluid pressure and elastic wave equation for solid displacement were coupled using solid-fluid interaction equations. Green's function in the time domain was represented in terms of normal modes for layered solid-fluid media. A comparison was made between the solutions of the present method and those obtained from Biot's (1952) characteristic equation as well as by Pekeris and Lifson (1957) so as to examine the effects of a fluid layer.
